Our hot-dipped galvanized gabion boxes (≥250g/m² zinc coating, EN 10244-2 Class A) have a design life of 25-50 years in freshwater river environments (pH 6-8). The zinc coating corrodes sacrificially at a predictable rate of approximately 5-10g/m² per year in clean freshwater, giving a coating life of 25+ years even before considering the underlying steel. In acidic water (pH <6) or brackish environments, we recommend PVC coated (0.5mm over galvanized, 2,000+ hours salt spray) or Galfan (Zn-5%Al) coated options which extend service life 2-3×. After the gabion fills with sediment and vegetation establishes, a natural protective layer forms that further reduces corrosion rates. We provide coating thickness certificates with every shipment.
